JIWA Financials & the Microsoft .NET Framework

New release, new environment due Q4 2011

JIWA Financials is being transformed. Our next release is being developed using the Microsoft .NET Framework, the official software framework for Microsoft Windows operating systems. What this means for our users is faster and easier addition of new functionality and new features, enhanced security, more reliable web services and a financial software solution underpinned by the latest Microsoft technologies.

Why are we doing this work?

Software applications exist in a continuously changing computing environment. The challenge for developers such as JIWA is to ensure stability for our customers by retaining the older, familiar computing environment while embracing the future.

JIWA is currently built using Microsoft Visual Basic 6. To keep our software ahead of market expectations and obtain the benefit of the latest developments it is time for us to move to Microsoft’s newest software environment - Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

What it means for you

JIWA Upgrade Advantage customers pay their annual maintenance in the expectation of that they will get functional software upgrades and technical software upgrades over time. The next release of JIWA Financials software will have many functional changes and, because of the move to the .NET environment, even more technical changes. It will be a release that will enable JIWA to retain compatibility with future releases of the Microsoft Windows environment and with future releases of the Microsoft SQL Server database.

Although we are still finalising changes we expect the release will operate on the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database, and from the client perspective, on MS Windows XP SP3, MS Vista and MS Windows 7.

The benefit for users will be a suite of JIWA Financials that is compatible with the computing environment well into the future. Without building too many expectations, we believe that this will be one of the largest technical renovations that we have done to our software in the last 10 years. Technically the code should be faster, more maintainable, more stable, more compatible, more extensible… All the things that nirvana always promises. If we can achieve these objectives I will be satisfied.
